On a bright, sunny day in Modena, Italy, the team from IK Multimeda said to Paul and I (James). “Go on boys, have at it. Take your pick” (or something like that). So, we did, and The Studio Rats MODENA Collection is the result. Working closely with the team from IK Multimedia, we have created a one of a kind TONEX V2 pack featuring 40 captures (20 Amp DI’s and 20 Amp & Cap captures) of some of our favourite amps in the IK collection. And just to add that little something extra, some patches feature an amazing Klon Centaur (a real one).

This collection was captured using a vintage Neuman U87 condenser microphone and a Royer R121 ribbon mic on the cabs and a direct DI giving you the option to add your own IR’s or cab simulations if you wish. You asked, we delivered.

Featured Amps

The Black Dumble –  This amp is everything we love about the Dumble sound. Dark, smooth and rich, this amp was so loud in the room yes always under control.

The Brown Dumble – Re-housed at some point during its life, the “Brown” Dumble sounds quite different to the “Black” while still sounding like a Dumble.

Fender Deluxe – This was the first amp we plugged into and we just loved the tone. This example has that Fender shine but with just a hint of grit and edge. It’s a stunner.

Fender Princeton – While not a vintage amp, it’s not one we have in our library thus far so, while we have a really great space to capture we took it. Classic small amp Fender sound right on the edge of cooking.

These four amps were all driving a 1×12 cab containing a Celestion JB-86 Joe Bonamassa signature 8 ohm speaker.

Diezel VH4 – This is a 4 channel monster, but hey, you don’t pick this amp for it’s clean channel.  This amp is built to chug and then scream when needed. It sounds massive

Marshall JTM45 – This late 60’s custom white JTM45 originally belonged to Brian Poole from British band The Tremeloes. It’s seen some action but has a one of a kind Marshall raw!

Orange OR120 – This 70’s era OR120 looks and sound amazing. It’s not a tone we have in any of our packs so it had to make the cut. The tone is big and dominant filling any stage or mix. Its does not need to be over processed.

These three amps were recorded with a stock 1960A 4×12 Vintage cab

Vox AC30BM – This is the only amp we have ever seen with just one knob (pot) no jokes please.  This was a limited run of 500 units made back in 2006 called the Vox AC30 Brian May Custom Limited Edition. The back panel has a micro slide switch for boosting gain in the preamp. This circuit compensates for differences in pickup output and approximates the effect of a custom-made treble/mid-boost pedal Mr May traditionally used in his signal chain. There’s another switch for adjusting the amp’s output mode to 15 or 30 watts, and a Treble Boost switch that engages the renowned Vox treble/top-boost sound, and thats is!  This was the only combo we recorded in it’s own cab.

The Modena pack features the following 20 captures.
