Some guitar gear works all the time, every time. And some, well, let’s say it has a tone of an era! The Rocktron Progap (and its sibling, the Progap Ultra) were the backbone of some of the most recognisable guitar tones of the 80’s and 90’s.
The ProGAP wasn’t just a distortion box in a rack. It was a fully MIDI-programmable guitar preamp that allowed players to store and instantly recall sounds via MIDI foot controllers.
In an era when most guitarists were still stepping on individual pedals, that was a big deal. Many players assume the original ProGAP was a digital modeller because it was programmable. In reality, the original ProGAP V1 (our unit) and V2 used digitally controlled analogue circuitry. The signal path remained analogue while MIDI handled parameter control and preset storage. The ProGAP became popular because it could cover a huge range of sounds. While it’s often remembered as an 80s metal machine, long-time users report that it also produces convincing clean, crunch and classic rock tones.
When the ProGAP was released, one of its selling points was the sheer amount of distortion available. Compared with many contemporary rack preamps, it offered massive saturation levels that appealed to the shredders and metal players of the era. Rocktron was among the first companies to include artist-created presets in a guitar processor.
The ProGAP reportedly featured sounds associated with players such as Steve Lukather and Allan Holdsworth, which was quite innovative at the time. A surprising number of rack enthusiasts felt the original analogue ProGAP could hang with much more expensive tube preamps. On forums, users have compared its character favourably to high-end Mesa-style tones, especially when paired with a good power amp and cabinet.

We offer you 10 of our favourite ProGAP sounds. These are mostly “tweaked” presets, but many are of our own creation.

These NAM captures are created without a power amp or speaker emulation. You will need to add these to get the best from this pack. Find your favourite IR’s and away you go.
